Solar Energy in Jordan: Status, challenges, and potentials.
Over the past couple of years, Jordan has been witnessing unprecedented and long-waited developments targeting diversifying its energy supply. These developments came at a time of a severe energy crisis that affected all sectors and resulted in extreme economic burdens. Probably the most remarkable of these developments are the efforts to facilitate the utilization and integration of renewable energy technologies within the national energy mix. Legislative frameworks have been approved and increasing numbers of projects are being commissioned, with much more expected in the very near future.
Today, renewable energy represents a real opportunity for Jordan which still requires proper planning and a concerted approach to materialize. Issues such as: regulations, tariffs, grid infrastructure, impact on grid stability, capacity building, quality assurance and control, are just examples of the issues that need to be addressed.
In this lecture, a critical review of the current status and the future outlook of the national energy scene in Jordan is presented with special emphasis on the role of renewable energy. Technological developments in solar energy along with the global industry dynamics are explained, followed by a discussion of the challenges facing the successful deployment and integration of renewable energy projects in Jordan and recommendations to capitalize on the immediate and future potentials of these projects.
