Biography

Ismael Al-Hinti is a professor, a passionate educator, an entrepreneur, and a recognized energy expert. He combines twenty years of academic research and teaching experience, with an exceptional industrial track record.
Prof. Al-Hinti received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2002 from Queen’s University Belfast, UK. His Ph.D. research was supported by Ford Motor Company, and later received a research grant from General Motors for his post-Doctoral research at the same university. In 2003 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Hashemite University and later served as Head of the Department during the period between 2006 and 2008. In 2011 he joined the School of Applied Technical Sciences at the German Jordanian University. Through his position as Department Head between 2011 and 2014, he led the establishment of the Mechanical & Maintenance Engineering Department and the development of a new study program.
Beside his rich academic experience, Prof. Al-Hinti is also a renowned expert and national leader in the fields of in energy management, energy auditing, measurement & verification, and renewable energy applications. He authored/co-authored 35 research papers in international energy journals which have been cited over 1000 times. In 2011, he co-founded ETA-max Energy & Environmental Solutions, which later became a market leader in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the Middle East region. Through his leadership position, he supervised the design and installation of grid-connected and off-grid solar photovoltaic projects in Jordan with a total capacity exceeding 20,000 kWp and managed over 45 energy audits for industrial facilities and office buildings in Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Moreover, Prof. Al-Hinti has a proven track record for developing and conducting capacity building and training programs in energy management and renewable energy for high profile regional clients, and is an authorized trainer by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for its CEM, CMVP, BEP courses and examinations. In 2016, Prof. Al-Hinti received special recognition from the AEE as a “Legend in Energy”. In 2016 he was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Jordan Green Building Council, and he is active in a variety of professional organizations and institutions.

Synopsis

Photovoltaics: Status, Challenges, and Prospects

Over the past decade, the world has been witnessing unprecedented and long-waited
developments in the field of renewable energy in general, and in solar photovoltaic (PV)
systems in particular. The installed capacity has increased by a factor of four in only five
years, and is expected to exceed 1000 GW before 2022. Such growth has been mainly due to
the increase in the efficiency of PV cells on one hand, and the continuous drop in their
prices on the other. This have made solar PV not only competitive, but also more feasible
than any conventional energy source today.
However, the successful integration of solar PV systems (small, medium, and large scale)
within electrical transmission and distribution grids that were developed for conventional
energy sources and plants is still a challenge. At the heart of this challenge is the
intermittent and variable nature of solar radiation, and the transition from centralized
generation to distributed generation. The development of legislative frameworks enabling
the transformation of consumers to become prosumers is essential. Major reforms in the
grid infrastructure and electricity tariff structures are also required.
With the accelerated developments in storage technologies, electric vehicles, smart control,
efficient buildings, big data, and artificial intelligence, most of the challenges facing
increased penetration of solar PV in electrical grids can be overcome. Moreover, these
developments today provide insights for optimized operation and maintenance of solar
systems in a manner that could have a stabilizing and positive impact on existing grids.
In this talk, a review of the current status and the future outlook of integration of solar PV
systems is presented. Technological developments in solar energy along with the global
industry dynamics are explained, followed by a discussion of the challenges facing the
successful deployment and integration of renewable energy projects and how technological
developments in related fields can be utilized to capitalize on the immediate and future
potentials of these projects.
